Description	Album is bound in textured black material. The number "9" is embossed in gold in the center of the cover. Number "9" is also affixed to spine with glue.Contains photographs taken by Jack London while on assignment to cover the Russo-Japanese War.

Notes	Slight wear on spine. The photographs in this album appear to be for the most part commercially produced for tourist trade and sale to newspapers. Not taken by London.

Jack London (1876-1916) was an American author best known for his fiction about California, Alaska, and the Pacific. His novel The Call of the Wild is among the most internationally popular works by an American. An autodidact, he directed his thirst for knowledge toward several passions, including sailing, ranching, and photography. He traveled widely, to Hawaii and throughout the South Pacific, through California, Oregon, Nevada, to Korea during the Russo-Japanese war, Mexico during the Mexican Civil War, and London, England, experiences which are reflected in his writing and his photographs.

p. 21 - Women and children. Staged portrait of a woman and two children wearing shabby clothes. The woman stands in the center wearing a full "jangot" and hides her face with a bundle of cloth she holds in front of her. The child on the left holds a large clay pot on his/her head, and the child on the right holds a woven basket. on floor is straw used as props on a platform surface.

p. 22 - Staged portrait of a group of children crouching on the ground playing game with small pieces. one child stands to the right and pointing toward the center of the game. Straw and rocks are used as props around the children.

p. 23 - Farmer boy. Staged portrait of a child bent over raking straw. He/she carries a woven basket over his/her shoulder, a large woven basket sits to the right.

p. 24 - Korean boys wrestling. Staged portrait of two Korean boys in a wrestling stance. Three other boys sit on floor and watch.

p. 25 - Korean boys. Group portrait of several Korean boys. All have long hair parted in the middle and pulled back, and are wear traditional white clothing. They lean together and look towards camera.

p. 26 - Korean teachers & pupils. Group portrait of five men. Four wear traditional white clothing and "jeongjagwan" style hats, one sitting in the middle, wears colorful clothes and a "samo" style hat. Around them are props including grass at their feet, potted plants, and a floral backdrop.

p. 27 - Korean children. Group portrait of several Korean children sitting in a row, one standing in front. They sit on a hillside covered with scrub brush. The standing child holds a rake in one hand and a scythe in the other.

p. 28 - King & crowned prince. King to left. Portrait Emperor Kojong and the Crown Prince Sunjong. They stand at attention wearing helmets and formal military attire.

p. 29 - Bullock loaded with wood. An ox stands in the middle of a dirt street. He is loaded down with pile of cut wood that reaches almost to the ground on each side. In the background is a long, low building.

p. 30 - A man with a cigarette in his mouth stands in a farm field, facing camera. He holds onto the end of a wooden plow hitched to an ox.

p. 31 - Building a sampan by Han. A long sampan sits on dry land in a grove of trees. A man and a child stand in front of it. In the background is the Han River.

p. 32 - Fuel bullock. An ox that is almost obscured by its large load of straw and sticks. A Korean man stands to the left, hanging on to a rope attached to the ox's head with chain.

p. 33 - Charcoal peddlers. Two young men carry large loads of straw and sticks on a-frame backpacks. They use walking sticks and bend over under the weight.

p. 34 - Farm scene. An ox grazing in the foreground of a dry agricultural field. A wooden plow sits on the right, a group of young people sit on the ground near the ox.

p. 35 - Chicken peddler. A man carries a cage made with wood and rope on his back. The cage is full of chickens. He wears a traditional "gat" and stands in a wooded area.

p. 36 - Summer chow. Two men crouch on either side of a low table set with several bowls. The man on the left uses chopsticks, the man on the right wears a "gat" and holds a pair of binoculars. Behind them is a wooded area.

p. 37 - A quick game of checkers. Two men seated on a path in the brush, playing checkers on a board on top of a straw mat. The man on the right has a long braid, the man on the left wears a topknot and smokes a long, thin pipe.

p. 38 - Korean traveler, mapu, servant. A man in white clothing, and a white "gat" sides astride a horse. A suitcase is strapped onto the back of the horse. on his right a young man stands with one hand on the horse. on his left, a man in dark clothing and a dark "gat."

p. 39 - Fuel gathers. Four young boys carry large bundles of sticks and straw on their backs. They stand in a hilly area covered in brush.

p. 40 - Two men and a young boy stand around concrete well. Each man carries two buckets on yokes over their shoulders. The boy stands on the rim of the well holding a bucket tied to a rope. The man on the right smokes a long, thin pipe. Behind them is a stone building with a thatched roof.

p. 41 - Two Korean men use a balancing contraption to lean a thick piece of lumber into position to saw. They use a two person crosscut saw, one man kneeling on a straw mat, the other on a platform above. A few men and children stand to the right and watch.

p. 42 - High official. An older man with a white beard, wearing ornate clothing and a "samo" style hat, sits astride a horse. Three men in white, wearing dark "gats" stand on the street around him. Behind them is a brick building with a tile roof.

p. 43 - Korean brass shop. A long, elevated storefront building with a tile roof. Brass pots are displayed on a ledge, and hanging overhead the front of the shop. Signs with Korean characters run along the top of the shop front.

p. 44 - Loaded with sugar. A two-wheeled cart hitched to an ox is loaded with several sacks, tied on to the back with rope. one man stands at the head of the ox, to the left, a man with a very wide "satgat" style hat, wears a wooden tray that hangs from a strap around his neck. A few single-story buildings line each side of the street.

p. 45 - Vegetable market. A narrow, dirt road with a waterway running through it. Several wooden a-frame backpacks loaded with vegetables are propped up on the road, and in the water. People stand and sit around the makeshift stands. Stone buildings with thatched roofs are on either side of the road.

p. 46 - Korean sawmill. Three men sit on ground, looking towards camera. The man in the middle smokes a long, thin pipe. The men on either side, one also smoking a pipe, hold a two-man crosscut saw over a piece of wood. Behind them are a pile of wood, a thatched structure, and another man visible from the neck down.

p. 47 - Two people sit inside a "gama" or litter, held by two bearers by poles in the front and back. They stand in front of a brick, one-story building.

p. 48 - South gate, biggest market. An outdoor market is crowded with people, mostly men, all dressed in white clothing. There are large baskets and bins filled with goods and scattered a-frame backpacks propped up in the open area. Along the edges are rows of market stalls contained in long, low buildings.

p. 49 - A man stands alone in a dry brushy area, with a wooden fence behind him. He wears a white headband and smokes a long, thin pipe. He carries a table or tray on an a-frame backpack on his back, and holds a walking stick.

p. 50 - A young woman stands in front of a "gama" or litter. Two bearers hold the gama up by poles on the front and back.
